According to the article Strategies for Teaching Kids Self-Regulation by B. Wells (2017),
Self-regulation is the process that your child’s brain goes through that gives them the ability to control their behaviors and emotions in response to a particular situation. It’s having the skill to calm yourself down when you get upset, to adjust to a change in environment or expectations, and to handle frustration without outbursts.
Therefore, a strategy that I’ve seen utilized successfully within the classroom are “calm corners” or “safe zones.” These areas are setup to help a student self-regulate or a quiet spot to read/relax. It is highly important for a teacher to teach these self-regulation strategies so that the students will know what to do once they are in the calm corner or safe zone. Here are a few strategies that I’ve seen: (1) slow, deep breathes (2) slowly counting backward from 10 – 1 (3) pleasant imagery (imagining a peaceful scenery) (4) positive self-talk (5) listening to soothing sounds. These calm corners or safe zones can be set up in a way that is beneficial to everyone within the class. A teacher could have a couple bean bags or a large colorful carpet area or anything else that can be utilized within this space. There are many things that can be used in this area such as books, stuffed animals, stress balls, lava lamp, puppets, etc. Whenever the student feels that their behavior is under control, they return to academics or the teacher can utilize a timer to determine when the student’s time is up. The space does not have to be big in order for this to be successful and all students should be able to use this area. By having a space set up for students that needs to use it for various reasons (emotional time out, cool off, de-escalate, etc.) makes the learning environment that much more conducive.
