1 Research Paper Idea Three-sentence idea of what you think you will research.2 Research Paper Pitch Pitch for your research paper, with clear thesis statement, recommendations, and bibliography of at least 8 relevant articles. November 16th3 Research Paper Final (HAT Assignment) Students write a research paper on a specific college student population. December 9th1 RESEARCH PAPER IDEA In accordance with instructions that will be posted on Blackboard, submit your desired research topic in approximately three sentences. This is an opportunity to gain early feedback given the short nature of the course about the feasibility of the idea and availability of research.2 RESEARCH PAPER PITCH This pitch allows us to see the basics of your research and helps you carefully craft a thesis statement that is focused on your topic. Upload a PowerPoint or other document in Blackboard that in 7 slides specifically states:1.) Your research topic/title and your name (slide 1)2.) Context for your paper (i.e. What are you looking at? What do we need to know as an introduction?) (slide 2)3.) Your (clear, concise) thesis sentence in the form of an argument (slide 3)4.) Brief synthesis of information/research regarding your student population (slide 4)5.) Brief initial findings. Please do not summarize EACH article. Instead, provide brief themes on important findings related to your thesis (slide 5)6.) Direction you think your recommendations will go based on findings (slide 6)7.) References (8 relevant, research articles or book chapters) (slide 7) Please note that effective PowerPoint design suggests font no smaller than 18pt, attention to color contrast, and simplified content.3 RESEARCH PAPER FINAL (HAT ASSIGNMENT) Using concepts from textbooks and review of the literature, write a research paper about creating the optimal campus environment in terms of student retention and success for one of the following groups of students who are returning veterans. Your 10 to 12 page paper will include an examination of the research on the college experiences and outcomes for this population. You will complete a literature review on the group’s unique characteristics, college experiences, practices that promote success, barriers to success, and common institutional interventions for each group. You must review a minimum of ten (10) research articles on the student group.Based on your findings, you will propose at least two (2) institutional programs or policies, and one (1) state or national policy that could enhance this group’s collegiate experience. Prepare the paper in APA style.Tips for your final paper please note that research articles are not media articles. While The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, and many other news outlets are excellent sources of information about higher education and may at times highlight research, they are not the same as primary research and/or scholarly articles. You are welcome to supplement your paper with news sources, but you must have at least 10 scholarly articles for full credit. You might view the following lists of peer reviewed journals related to higher education and student affairs to get a sense of journals that might have articles related to your population.• http://libguides.bgsu.edu/c.php?g=227115&p=1505430• https://library.louisville.edu/ekstrom/CFDCUsing the UofL library, you might also conduct searches in the ERIC (EBSCO) database as a start: https://library.louisville.edu/subjects/education. Scholarly books, reports from the government, research institutes (e.g., https://heri.ucla.edu/) or educational think-tanks would also be appropriate.Simply listing sources in the bibliography is not sufficient for this assignment. One must write about the research and make sense of it in the paper itself. Thus, I expect you will have some of your own written analysis on the research. The most effective papers will not simply give summaries of the 10- 12 articles in separate paragraphs but will find common themes and related findings or data that the articles then together inform. The goal is to move away from simple summarizing and move toward analysis, synthesis, and broad connected understanding of unique pieces of research. Work to use the articles/research together to make some broad points and an argument that you can describe in the introduction and in a thesis sentence. Be sure to use APA guidelines and avoid plagiarizing by appropriately citing. Cite both in-text and in a bibliography (be sure sources are in both). Because one must find research that is related and relevant to one’s paper, you will find many more than 10 articles; select the 10+ that most relate to the points you feel most pertinent to the topic. This assignment includes one other key element. You will be matched with a peer in class. I ask that you complete a thorough first draft of your assignment and share it with your peer (and the instructor). Points for this first draft are focused mostly on completing the assignment in a thorough, thoughtful fashion. Students will then be asked to give feedback to your peer and return the document (and cc the instructor). In the final HAT, incorporate your peer’s feedback for a final draft
