I thought it was pretty cool that Mr. Zinn believes in plasticity of the brain. The thought that you can train your brain to be better (kind of like working out) is a cool idea. It means that you aren’t exactly stuck with whatever you were born with. You can break out of what your DNA dictates and grow beyond.I also liked that he mentions that mindfulness is about being kind to yourself. Recognizing that certain thought patterns or emotions are normal and that it is ok to feel that way is a good way to take some of the pressure off of yourself and keep from pushing yourself into an even deeper spiral. I appreciated that he said that these practices are very HARD but very worth it. Also that the NOW is all we have so why not live in it.The comments he made about Homo Sapien Sapien and that we aren’t as aware as we should be were very interesting. That we are doing ourselves harm by not being aware of the present or pushing things forward to be dealt with in the future.

This level of clarity can only be achieved by taking control of our mind, possible through conscious effort and requires practice. Most humans go through their lives referring to past moments to help navigate them through present moments, rather than treating each life moment completely separate from any other moment. Creating much mental unrest is due to the manner is which the mind is utilized. Much of society treats their mind as an archive of experiences and attempts to retrieve a memory/s similar to present moment rather than giving each moment it’s own file and treating it as unique instance. Being present is a decision that must be made presently and utilizing the present information provided by all senses is key to finding clarity and avoiding mental health conditions that currently plague society like anxiety and depression.
Our brains are powerful, and have the potential to be re-shaped to work with our senses and the body as a whole. Being in tune with our body and aware of what we are experiencing and why is living in the moment. Attentive to our breathing and appreciation for life as it is handed to us is a simple technique used to being mindful, yet requires practice. Jon Zinn emphasizes the importance of being kind and non-judgmental to our own lives as another important practice to prevent unhappiness. Judging our lives harshly tends to keep our minds in the past and future. Often the preferred place for depression and anxiety to reside.
Being mindful if put to practice eventually becomes a lifestyle, it changes the mind into treating life with an appreciative state of mind. It maximizes time uniquely, which leads to fulfillment of each passing minute. It can be performed any place, any time, any situation. It’s becoming more popular and promoted within the workforce and in society. I believe in living a mindful life, it was introduced personally and in time for some of my most stressful years of life and to this day i have to remind myself to treat each day as a unique moment, interact with others as unique individuals, and most importantly be optimistic and appreciative of life.
