This assignment requires you to write a short essay reflecting on the special lecture by Prof. Jeremy Adelman, who will be speaking on the topic “Development or Justice: A Global History”.
Prof. Adelman is Henry Charles Lea Professor of History and Director of the Global History Lab, Princeton University.
SYNOPSIS OF LECTURE: Born in the late nineteenth-century, the idea of development emerged out of a growing sense of unfairness and eventually despair about the prospects for global economic justice. Ever since, it has yielded remedies as well as revolutions. In its name, there have been coups d’états, mega projects and micro nudges. This lecture takes a long, global, view of what development has meant – and it speculates on what’s left in the age of climate change, uncertainty, and inequality.
